Sheila E. Antrum, RN, MHSA, NEA-BC, Chief Nursing & Patient Care Services Officer, will be recognized as the 2012 recipient of the Margretta Madden Styles Award. She will be presented with the award at the Alpha Eta chapter of Sigma Theta Tau Annual Business meeting and Induction Ceremony on Monday June 4th.
Margretta Madden Styles Award
First presented in 1987, the Margretta Madden Styles Award is named in honor of the esteemed former Dean of the School of Nursing at the University of California, San Francisco. The purpose of the award is to recognize excellence in nursing, in clinical practice, teaching, administration, or research among Alpha Eta members. The award criteria are as follows: Evidence of leadership within the field of practice (innovation, inspiration, and ability to empower others); Vision in nursing (considers the realities of today, envisions the possibilities of tomorrow); and Contribution to furthering the image of nursing (caring, professional, enhances the public image of nursing).
Education as a foundation
Nominations were submitted by nurse leaders at both the Medical Center and the School of Nursing. In her letter of support, Catherine Waters, RN, PhD, FAAN, Professor in the Community Health Systems Department and Commissioner for the San Francisco Health Commission, stated “Ms. Antrum continues to amaze me with the diversity of nursing and patient care service initiatives that she has designed and implemented at the UCSF Medical Center.” “Under the leadership of and the support from Ms. Antrum, UCSF Medical Center is our primary project partner (that) allows students to partner with nurse-led projects, connecting theory and research to evidenced-based nursing practice.”
Patient safety and innovative vision
From the Department of Nursing, Daphne Stannard, RN, PhD, CCRN, CCNS, FCCM, Associate Chief Nurse Researcher & Perianesthesia CNS, stated the following in her nomination: “ An example of transformational leadership qualities is the Nursing Simulation Lab that was created so that nurses, respiratory therapists, and pharmacists would have hands-on simulated experience using the Bar Code Medication Administration technology in a safe environment before the system went live in the hospital environment.” “Over the past year, Ms. Antrum led the Medical Center’s journey to excellence by applying for Magnet designation… an acknowledgement of organizational excellence.
